Travel with us into the past – the time of the famous Roman Empire. Visit the Roman forum in Zadar, Diocletian´s palace in Split, walk around the remains of the Antique Salona, go to the island Brač to see remains of roman villas rustica, continue to Narona (Vid) to visit the Archaeological Museum with a large collection of statues, mosaics, coins, bone artefacts…
Day 1: Zadar
Upon arrival at Zadar airport, meeting with travel accompanist and drive to Zadar for sightseeing.
Zadar is a magnificent town with long and rich history, situated on the territory inhabited even from the period of old stone age. In the second century B.C., Zadar was under Roman domination and it was called Colonia Julia Jader. Its’ old part is situated on a little peninsula and there are more than 600 cultural monuments: church of saint Donat,saint Anastacia’s cathedral,church and monastery of saint Mary, church of saint Chrysogonus…The tour also includes entrance ticket to the Museum of ancient glass which is one of the first collections of Roman glassware outside Italy, jars and vials retrieved from archaeological sites across Dalmatia. After sightseeing, accommodation in hotel in Zadar region. Overnight.
Day 2: Zadar – Trogir – Split
Departure to Trogir and professional guidance of Trogir. Because of its’ position, Trogir is called «little Wenice», as it is situated on a little island, connected with one bridge with ground and with another bridge with the peninsula of Ciovo. It was founded in the 3. century by Greek colonists and already in the Roman period was known as„Tragurium marmore notum“, what indicates that Trogir was famous by its’ artists, masters of marble.
The tour includes most famous monuments such as: Cathedral of St Lawrence, Radovan’s portal with sculptures, narrative and allegorical reliefs and a rich decoration monument of the highest category, a unique example of not only the Croatian Romanesque sculpture but also of the Northern Dalmatia, San Sebastian Hall and Cipiko palace- particularly attractive in the square… After sightseeing, free afternoon in Trogir. Continuation to Split. Accommodation in hotel. Overnight.
Day 3: Split – Salona – Split
After breakfast, visit of Split with local guide. Split is the capital city of the provence of Dalmatia and cultural and historic mecca. The tour takes you on the unique journey from the construction of one of the best preserved late antic monuments-Diocletian’s palace to the development of Medieval city inside and outside the walls of the palace. Guests will see emperor’s square: Peristyle, the supstructure halls of Diocletian’s palace, People’s square….. Free time in Split.
Continuation to Salona – situated less than 10 km away from Split. Salona was the capital city of the Roman province Dalmatia and in 630. A.D. was destroyed by the attacks of Avars and Slavs. But, many remains from Roman period witness today the glory of Salona-today Solin. After visit, return to hotel. Overnight.
Day 4: Split – whole day excursion to Brač – Split
Excursion to the island of Brač. Island of Brač is situated just opposite Split and by ferry, only 50 minutes away. It has been inhabited in Roman period and there are lots of traces from that period as Romans arrived to that island approximately 167. B.C.
The visit will include stops near the most notable roman traces:
SUPETAR: – remains of roman villa rustica, from 6.century, near cemetary
– remains of the early christian sarcophagus near church
SPLITSKA: – little port from which stone was extracted for the construction of the
– quarrys Rasohe and Plata, above Splitska towards Škrip
MIRJE: above Postira, roman villa
LOVREČINA: early christian basilicas (between Postira and Pučišća)
*Organised lunch in the tavern. The only entrance ticket for this day will be for Museum of the island Brač, located in Škrip, in which there are many artefacts from the Roman period, as from the other periods. Return by ferry to Split. Overnight.
Day 5: Split – Vid & Metković – Split
Breakfast and departure to Narona-Vid. Narona Archaeological Museum is situated in Vid, near Metković, approximately 140 km away from Split.
It is the first museum in Croatia, opened in situ; which means it has been opened on the location where remains have been discovered. Museum will enthause its’ visitors with large collection, for example: Roman temple – the Augusteum – excavated in 1995 and 1996, seventeen statues of Roman emperors and their family members, mosaics, coins, bone artefacts, oil-lamps, metal, glass, potter. After the visit, some leisure time and organised lunch in restaurant in Metković. *Optional: visit of Natural History Museum in Metković. Return back to Split in the evening.
Day 6: Split airport
After breakfast, depending of the departure flight transfer to airport.
